Hadera River Park: A Natural Haven of History, Wildlife, and Mystery

Hadera River Park is a remarkable destination that showcases the transformation of a once heavily polluted stream into a thriving ecosystem. Situated at the mouth of the Hadera River, which runs about 50 kilometers from the eastern slopes of Samaria to the Mediterranean Sea, the park marks the final stretch of this historic watercourse. The river flows past the iconic Rabin Power Station, which plays an integral role in the area's fascinating environmental story.

A River Reborn: Purification and Transformation

In the past, the Hadera River was notorious for being one of the most polluted waterways along the coastal plains. However, the turning point came in 1982, with a groundbreaking collaboration between the Jewish National Fund and the Israel Electric Corporation (IEC). Following the construction of the power plant, it was decided that seawater used to cool the power plant's turbines would be pumped into the river to purify it.

This initiative, along with the construction of a dam near the coastal road, redirected the polluted upstream waters, allowing clean water to flow in the lower section. Today, this area features a pristine 40-meter-wide stream with a park encompassing 75 hectares. This revitalized environment offers a relaxing and scenic retreat, complete with small pools near four dams where visitors can sit and enjoy the calm water.

Nature’s Revival: Fauna, Flora, and Eucalyptus Groves

The park is a testament to ecological renewal. The southern bank features eucalyptus groves planted in the 1930s to halt the spread of coastal sand dunes. Alongside these groves, an archaeological discovery from the Kabarite civilization sheds light on the area's ancient past. The Kabarite culture, a prehistoric society from the Epipalaeolithic period (23,000-18,000 BC), provides a glimpse into the transition from hunter-gatherers to early agriculturalists.

Birdwatchers will be delighted to know that the park is home to an array of waterfowl. Species such as the grey heron, kingfisher, cormorants and more, make this area their seasonal home between November and March. They thrive alongside the fish population that returned to the river after its extensive rehabilitation. A picnic area and a unique sand dune surfing facility add to the park's recreational appeal.

The Shark Mystery: A Global Phenomenon

Perhaps one of the park’s most intriguing and mysterious phenomena is the arrival of large flock of sharks each winter. These sharks, including mainly the sandbar shark and dusky shark, are drawn to the warm waters released from the IEC turbines. Despite their impressive size, they are harmless to humans. The sight of sharks so close to the shore has made Hadera a pilgrimage site for divers, photographers, and curious travelers from around the world.

This unique natural occurrence, combined with the overall serenity and wildlife of the park, makes Hadera River Park a truly special destination. The sharks’ presence is still not fully understood, adding an element of wonder to this incredible spot.

The Perfect Day Out

Whether you’re interested in wildlife, history, or just a relaxing day out, Hadera River Park offers it all. You can stroll along the promenade, enjoy a peaceful picnic, or explore the rich history of the Kabarite civilization. The park is also a key waypoint on the Israel National Trail, offering hikers a chance to experience its natural beauty up close.

As you explore Hadera River Park, you'll witness firsthand the powerful transformation of nature and the lasting impact of environmental stewardship. It’s a space where history meets modern-day mystery and where the wonders of wildlife come alive against the backdrop of a rejuvenated river.
