Exploring Rosh HaAyin with bicycles: A Journey Through History and Nature

Saturday morning, the air filled with the promise of a beautiful day ahead. In front of an old building that once served as a train station during Ottoman times, we, eleven friends gathered, eager for adventure and discovery. This was the starting point of a journey led by Avner, a long-time resident of Rosh HaAyin with a passion for the area's hidden gems.

As we embarked on a short ride around Tel Afek in Rosh HaAyin, Avner unveiled a treasure trove of knowledge. For thirty years, he had roamed these lands, yet it was only recently that his curiosity was piqued, prompting him to delve into the history and secrets of this picturesque region.

Avner's thoughtful binder held ancient maps and tales of bygone eras, transporting us back in time. At Tel Afek, amid the ruins and whispers of history, Avner painted vivid pictures of the past, breathing life into forgotten tales. Many more riders passed by, "tasting" the beauty of the place.

The journey continued to more sites, weaving through Rosh HaAyin's rich tapestry of nature and heritage. We paused by the Pool of Yellow Pond Lily, a serene spot intertwined with the sources of the Yarkon River. The Rosh HaAyin Forest beckoned with its lush greenery, while Avner's insights added layers of meaning to every stop.

Among other things, we crossed a stream, took pictures next to a large eucalyptus tree, and absorbed Avner's wisdom like sponges. Each anecdote and historical tidbit enriched the experience, turning a simple ride into a profound exploration of place and time.

Migdal Zedek awaited almost at journey's end, perched atop a hill like a silent sentinel of history. Passing ancient lime quarries, we ascended, greeted by a breathtaking vista. Here, amidst presentations recounting the area's past, we savored coffee in the café located there, our minds still buzzing with newfound knowledge.

Descending from Migdal Zedek, we stopped to wait for the last riders and a delightful surprise awaited—a turtle crossing our path. In a moment of wonder, amidst laughter and awe, we marveled at the creature's unexpected speed, contrary to the stigma. I only had a few seconds to take pictures, so instinctively and at top speed I lay down on the path and took a few photos before it slipped into the vegetation. We relished the serendipity of nature's encounters.

The journey through Rosh HaAyin wasn't just about physical landmarks; it was a voyage of discovery, friendship, and shared learning. It reminded everyone that beauty and history often hide in plain sight, waiting for curious souls like Avner and us to unveil their stories.
