Exploring Givat HaMo're Reserve and the Rare Nazareth Iris

In the heart of the Jezreel Valley, Givat HaMo'reh stands as a significant natural and historical landmark in Israel. Rising to an elevation of 515 meters above sea level, this mountain not only offers breathtaking landscapes but also carries a rich historical and biblical heritage.

Historical and Biblical Significance

Givat HaMo'reh is mentioned in the Bible in connection with Gideon’s battle against the Midianites. As described in Judges 7:1: “Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh."

Today, the mountain is home to the neighborhood of "Givat HaMoreh" in Afula city and is also known in Arabic as "Jabal Dahi," named after the revered "Nabi a-Dahi," whose tomb is located there. A nearby Arab village, Kfar Dahi, also bears his name.

Nature Reserve and Stunning Scenic Views

A portion of Givat HaMo'reh has been designated as a nature reserve, preserving its diverse flora and fauna. A large forest covers much of the hill, providing a haven for various plant species and wildlife, including the Nazareth Iris and the mountain lupine that bloom in the spring. In the heart of the forest, visitors can ascend an observation tower offering a spectacular 360-degree view. From this vantage point, one can take in breathtaking sights of Afula, the Jezreel Valley, the Tabor Mountain, the Gilboa and Gilead Mountains, the Beit She'an Valley, Ramat Menashe, the Carmel, and even the Upper Galilee Mountains.

The Nazareth Iris: A Rare Floral Treasure

One of the most remarkable aspects of Givat HaMo'reh is the seasonal bloom of the Nazareth Iris (Iris Bismarckian). This rare and endangered flower is a part of the Iris group and is legally protected due to its limited distribution. Found only in Israel and its neighboring regions, the Nazareth Iris typically blooms between February and March, adding bursts of color to the landscape. This extraordinary flower boasts striking characteristics: The outer perianth leaves are yellowish with intricate purple-brown dots. The inner perianth leaves display a velvety dark center, transitioning to a near-white shade with brown veins and additional purple-brown markings.

The Nazareth Iris flourishes in sunlit, rocky meadows, making it a true hidden gem for nature lovers and botanists. Unlike other wildflowers that grow in clusters, this iris is more sparsely distributed, requiring a keen eye to spot it. However, those fortunate enough to witness its bloom are rewarded with an unforgettable sight of its magnificent beauty.

A Must-Visit Destination for Nature and History Enthusiasts

Whether you're drawn by its biblical connections, panoramic views, or rare flora, Givat HaMo'reh offers a unique experience for visitors. Springtime is particularly magical, with the blossoming of mountain lupines, wildflowers, and the elusive Nazareth Iris.

A visit to this remarkable reserve is not only a chance to enjoy breathtaking nature but also to connect with a place steeped in history and heritage.
