Cycling Through Jerusalem: A Day of Scenic Beauty and Timeless Connections

Our adventure began in the Beit Zayit Dam parking lot, where we met, ready to embark on a cycling journey that would take us through some of the most beautiful sights Jerusalem has to offer. With only a brief preparation, we hopped on our bicycles and set off, eager to explore.

As we pedaled forward, we were greeted by a stunning scene: clouds, like fluffy pillows, resting peacefully in the ravines. The crisp, cold air of a sunny winter day only enhanced the beauty around us. We made our way towards the Kerem Tunnel. The way to the tunnel was a dreamlike path—forested mountains, fog mingling with the trees, and sunlight casting a magical glow over it all. The tunnel, which is only for cyclists and is 2 km long, led us towards Malcha, and to the lively railway trail. People who had just left synagogue were now mingling with runners and families, all enjoying the beautiful Shabbat atmosphere. The energy of the crowd was contagious, adding a sense of celebration to our ride.

Next, we arrived at the First Station Compound, a vibrant hub where we took a moment to sit down and enjoy coffee and delicious pastries. Nearby, a group of older people was gathered around a table playing backgammon, accompanied by the rhythm of Greek happy music in the background. Their table was covered with an array of delectable treats, adding to the warmth and charm of the scene.

From there, we cycled to one of Jerusalem's most breathtaking spots, the Armon Hanatziv promenade. The view of the Old City and the City of David stretched out before us, a stunning juxtaposition of ancient and modern. It was here that Izzy played to us on his loudspeakers the beloved and moving song "Jerusalem of Gold," filling the air with a deep sense of connection to the city's timeless beauty. The group, the music, and the scenery made for a moment of pure joy.

After taking a group photo to capture the memory, we rode through the Yemin Moshe neighborhood and made our way to Jaffa Gate, entering the Old City. The narrow, bustling streets were filled with tourists and locals alike. People were sitting at small tables outside cafes, and festive decorations adorned the area, adding to the magical atmosphere.

We continued our ride out through the New Gate, cycling through Safra Square before hopping on the Light Rail route to Emeq HaArazim. The final stretch of our journey took us through Emeq HaArazim and back to the cars, completing a memorable 40-kilometer ride.

To cap off the day, we stopped at the Portsei ha-Derekh li-Yerushalaim Memorial Monument, where we shared a meal together, reflecting on the beautiful day we had experienced. It was a ride filled with scenic beauty, rich history, and the joy of shared moments—an adventure that will stay with us forever.
